Initiates
|
The first of the high Castes is regarded by the lower Castes as representatives of the Priest-Kings, the high Castes and more intellectual citizens do not take their teaching seriously, but tend to tolerate them because of their influence on the lower Caste citizens. The Initiates regard themselves as the Highest Caste. They have their own laws and courts. Their education is wholly focused on mathematics and interpretations of revelations of the Priest-Kings. The Priest -Kings themselves consider the Caste an example of the aberrations of human kind. The Initiates believe only they can achieve eternal life. Initiates do not eat meat or beans, and are celibate. Their numbers are replenished by recruiting young men to become novices. White Caste. | |

The Caste which includes the scholars and clerks of Gor. There are divisions and rankings within the group, from simple copiers to the savants of the city. Blue Caste. | |

The caste which includes architects, draftsmen, stonemasons. The Builders are one of the five High Castes. Yellow Caste. | |

The caste which practices the healing arts; the Physicians are one of the five High Castes which make up the Gorean government. Green Caste. | |

|
The caste of those who deal in merchandise and trading; their caste colors are white and gold. Caste members can range from simple shop keepers to the rich and powerful, often significant in local political activities, searching for ways to advance their own prominence, sometimes to the point of contributing to armed conflict. Their caste color is gold and white. | |

The sub-caste of the Merchants, one who deals in human merchandise, their colors are blue and yellow. | |
|
An additional sub-caste of the Merchants; these are those who engage in the trade and speculation of money for a profit, and the only product they handle is money. They are the bankers of Gor. | |

Another very broad caste, which consists of hundreds of sub-castes. Generally, those who are members of this caste are those who prepare sa-tarna, or vegetarian food, in any of a hundred thousand forms. Yellow and Red. | |

This caste, in conjunction with the caste of Bakers, is responsible for maintaining the majority of the Gorean industries involved with food service. This caste and its many sub-castes concern themselves with the acquisition and preparation of sa-tassna, all forms of edible Gorean meat. | |

This caste concerns itself the professional production of most fruit based Gorean alcohol. Caste colors are white with green leaves. | |

This caste concerns itself with the production of most grain based Gorean alcohol. | |

This caste includes several dozen sub-castes, each with its own specialty. There is a sub-caste of the caste of Sailors known as the caste of Bargemen, those who propel and steer the great river barges upon the freshwater waterways of Gor. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Sailors, they are concerned with harvesting the vast variety of Gorean aquatic life for human consumption. There are additional sub-castes of this caste, including the Castes of River Fishermen and the caste of Thassa Fishermen. The caste of Net Makers, an artisan caste, is often considered a sub-caste of the caste of Fishermen. | |

This is a very broad caste which includes hundreds of sub-castes. Since any production of hand-made goods, no matter its use, is considered by the typical Gorean to be a work of art, this caste is inclusive of many crafts. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Artisans. They are involved in the production of containment vessels. Their caste colors are Brown and Green. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Artisans. They produce the saddlery, harness and tack used to manage all of the various riding and draft beasts of Gor. Their caste color is Tan. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Artisans. They are concerned with the production of most metal items fabricated upon Gor. Sub-castes of this caste include the caste of Swordmakers and the caste of Armorers, who produce the various shields and helmets in use upon Gor, and subcaste of blacksmith or farrier. Their caste color is Steel Gray. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Cloth Workers responsible for the processing of raw wool into yarn. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Artisans. Produces rope, binding fiber, thread and cordage of all types. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Artisans. Concerned with the fabrication of various leather goods from animal hides of all types. | |

On Gor the singer or poet is regarded as a craftsman that has a role to play in the social structure celebrating battles and histories singing of heroes and cities but also he is expected to sing of living and of love and joy not merely of arms and glory; and too it is his function to remind the Goreans from time to time of loneliness and death lest they should forget that they are men. This Caste is outlawed in Tharna. | |

Those who have dedicated their lives to the furtherance of the Gorean game of Kaissa. A rare caste, but one which is found and supported in almost any city. A sub-caste of the caste of Artisans, because most Goreans consider the playing of Kaissa to be an art form. granted blanket immunity to prosecution and slavery wear distinctive hooded robes in their caste colors. Caste colors: Checkered, Red and Yellow. | |

A large caste category which contains many specific sub-castes, all concerned with providing various public services to the inhabitants of a particular city or village. Their caste color is Gray. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Municipal Servants. This caste is responsible for patrolling the city or village streets, arresting those who violate local ordinances and laws, and insuring the general well-being of the citizenry. Gorean equivalent of a police force. Have no caste colors, and typically wear uniforms provided them by the city or village in which they work. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Municipal Servants.This caste concerns itself with lighting the tharlarion oil lamps used to provide illumination to the city streets. Caste colors are striped green, white and red. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Municipal Servants. This caste concerns itself with the management of collecting the assorted garbage and waste by-products stored in local waste bins and, in conjunction with the caste of Drovers, seeing that it is properly disposed of in carnaria (waste pits) located beyond the city limits. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Animal Handlers, this caste concerns itself with the care, feeding and training of the Gorean Sleen, the six-legged furred hunting reptile of Gor. | |

This caste, a sub-caste of the caste of Animal Handlers, is exclusive to the island Ubarate of Tyros. Members of this caste concern themselves with the care, feeding and training of the Gorean vart, a bat-like creature in use upon Tyros, often trained and used as a weapon. | |

A sub-caste of the caste of Animal Handlers. This caste concerns itself with the care and feeding of the various draft animals in use upon Gor, as well as the task of using wagons drawn by such creatures to ship goods from city to city. | |

Sub-caste of the caste of Animal Handlers, this caste concerns itself with the care and maintenance of herds of Goats and other animals such as the woolly Gorean hurt. | |

A large caste category which contains many specific sub-castes, all concerned with protecting and managing the vast resources of various Gorean forests claimed by a particular city or village. They are experts in various forms of woodcraft and are the forest hunters, forest marshals, and forest trackers of Gor. Caste Colors are Brown and Black. | |

Known also as Caste of Carrier's of Wood, individuals in this Caste are often very large and can frequently be seen carrying burdens of wood. This Caste, with the Caste of Charcoal Makers, provides fuel for the cities. | |

This caste concerns itself with the production of charcoal for use in Gorean forges and ovens. Caste colors are Black and Gray. | |

This caste concerns itself with the production of various types of scented perfumes, used for purposes of esthetic appeal. Often works in conjunction with the caste of Oil Makers to produce scented oils and such. Also works with the caste of Charcoal Makers and the caste of Spice Merchants to create incense. | |

Czehar players have the most prestige, followed by the flutists and the players of the kalika. The players of the drums come next, and the farthest fellow down the list is the man who keeps the bag of miscellaneous instruments, playing them and parceling them out to others as needed. Musicians are never enslaved, but they may be exiled, tortured, or slain. It is said, that he who makes music must, like the tarn and the Vosk gull, be free. | |

A slightly higher caste than the caste of Peasants, this is the caste of those who dwell in the various marshes and swamps of Gor, and who harvest Rence (similar to Urthan rice). They reside on great floating man-made islands amidst the marshes and are highly territorial and secretive. Known for their adoption and usage of the "Peasant Bow" in combat. | |

The caste of those who kill for pay; exists only in Ar. Their caste color is black. | |

The caste of those who make their living by stealing, robbery, picking pockets etc., exists only in Port Kar. They are identified, not by color, but by a tiny, three-pronged brand burned onto the upper right cheekbone. | |

The basic caste of Gor; they refer to themselves as the 'Ox on Which the Home Stone Rests' Caste color is Brown. | |

Found only among the Wagon Peoples, they are trained as carefully as scribes or physicians in the arts of detaining life. Though some are famous for services rendered to Initiates and Ubars, they are always hooded. The hood is removed only when the sentence is death, so that only condemned men have seen what lies beneath it. Their caste colors are Black and Red. | |

A Tuchuk shaman who reads portents and tells the future. He furnishes various amulets and potions, primarily to women who seek magical intercession. Tuchuk women are not allowed to pray to the Sky as the men do. One object of the haruspex is a colored string, which is imbued with magical powers by the sequence of knots tied into it by the haruspex. It is the haruspex, during the Omen Year, who decides if the signs are favorable to choose an Ubar San of the Wagon Peoples. Various methods are used, 'for a piece of meat he would read the wind and the grass; for cup of wine the stars and the flight of birds; for a fat-bellied dinner the liver of a sleen or slave'. | |

Those that keep in memory the year names for the Wagon Peoples sometimes one thousand consecutive names. | |

The keepers of a large and complex oral literature, which they recite, in part, at various times. | |

Their talents, presumably, are used in conjunction with the spells of the haruspex to ensure the health of the Wagon Peoples. | |

The leather, no doubt comes from the tanned and sewn skins of the bosk. It is used for clothing, and it's hides cover their wagons; it's leather is used in fashionining shields. | |
